Baroque
Baroque may come from the term barocco, as used for irregular or misshapen pearls. When originally
used as a descriptive term, it was a reference to a departure from classicism
not only in painting, but in architecture, sculpture, music and
literature. Baroque art as we know it is associated with a large
scale; sweeping diagonal movement; a tendency to break away from the picture
plane both in depth and towards the viewer; forms flowing and swirling one into
the other; colorism, chiaroscuro and illusionism.* Basically, drama at its best. Our most
prominent artists of the time were Caravaggio and Rubens, both of whom are
known to have a great effect on the art of the 17th Century. However,
take a look around and determine for yourself who was great and what they
contributed. And as always, if you don't see the image you are looking for,
contact us. We can still recreate it.
