Expressionism

Go to this painting

Initially, the term Expressionism referred to art that came after Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. The idea is that instead of looking outward to communicate, artists chose to look inward to create their art. In other words, inspiration became more spiritual, and the leaders of this category are certainly those members of the German groups Die Brucke and Der Blaue Reiter.* All of the artists we have included in this category reflect this new spirituality, but other groups listed elsewhere on this site- like the Fauves and the Cubists- also depicted their own "expressionism", so check them out, too! And as always, if you don't see the image you are looking for, contact us. We can still recreate it.
