Neoclassicism

Go to this painting

The accidental rediscovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 1748 gave way to the "noble simplicity" of Neoclassicism in the late seventeenth century. The Neoclassical roots lie in ancient ideals, yet the style is inventive in the ways it adopts ancient aesthetics by adding more emotional elements to the final works. One of the most prominent painters of this time was Jacques Louis David, who was not only a leader before and during the French Revolution, but also after the fall of the monarchy and subsequent reign of Napoleon. His clear, uncomplicated images challenged the French to embrace patriotism and applaud loyalty. See this unique imagery throughout our category listings.
